Sonardyne RT 6 Acoustic Release Family

Combining the extensive track record of Sonardyne’s previous acoustic releases with the flexibility of thier 6G hardware platform, means you can deploy, track and release RT 6 acoustic release transponders with ease. Some models can even be controlled using an Android app.

Category: Tag:

The Sonardyne RT 6 family provides reliable acoustic release, tracking and recovery for oceanographic instruments, seabed equipment, moorings and subsea structures.

Each RT 6 combines a remotely commanded mechanical release with a Sonardyne 6G acoustic transponder. This allows operators to deploy valuable equipment, acoustically locate and monitor it during the deployment, then command the release when the equipment is ready to be recovered.

The family covers applications ranging from continental-shelf environmental monitoring through to full-ocean-depth moorings, heavy subsea structures, salvage and deepwater construction.

The four available products are:

RT 6-1000: compact, cost-effective release for instruments and equipment deployed to depths of 1,000 m.

RT 6-3000: medium-frequency release for deepwater moorings and subsea structures to 3,000 m.

RT 6-6000: low-medium-frequency release for long-duration deployments to 6,000 m.

RT 6-HD: heavy-duty, 7,000 m-rated release with a 2,500 kg Working Load Limit.

Deploy, Track, Locate and Recover

Acoustic releases are commonly installed between an anchor or ballast weight and the equipment that must eventually be recovered. During recovery, a coded acoustic command is transmitted from the vessel to the release transponder.

Once a valid release command is received, the mechanical release separates the equipment or mooring from its anchor. Positive buoyancy then returns the recoverable section to the surface.

Unlike a basic acoustic release, each RT 6 also functions as a navigation transponder. When used with a compatible Ranger 2 USBL system, the vessel can track and position the release throughout deployment, monitoring and recovery.

This integrated functionality can reduce the need for separate release and tracking transponders on the same equipment frame.

Typical Applications

The Working Load Limit is not the same as the maximum safe release load, proof load or breaking load. The complete deployment arrangement, including shackles, bridles, frames, ropes and lifting components, must be assessed as an integrated system.

Compatible Control and Tracking Systems

Depending on the RT 6 model and acoustic frequency, releases can be configured, tested, tracked and commanded using compatible Sonardyne equipment.

  • Ranger 2 USBL: enables compatible releases to be tracked, positioned and commanded using an existing vessel USBL system.
  • Deck Topside: rugged portable command-and-control system with an over-the-side dunking transducer.
  • RT 6 Android application: used with the RT 6-1000 for NFC configuration and supported control workflows.
  • iWand: handheld acoustic transponder test and configuration tool used with the deeper RT 6 models.

The correct topside and transducer frequency must be selected for the intended RT 6 model. Medium Frequency and Low Medium Frequency products are not interchangeable with every topside configuration.

Deployment and Selection Considerations

Load Ratings

The Working Load Limit is the principal rated continuous load for selection purposes. Proof load, breaking load and maximum safe release load describe different aspects of the release’s mechanical performance and must not be treated as equivalent values.

The weakest component in the deployment system determines the allowable load. Shackles, master links, bridles, wire, rope, frames and lifting points must be selected and certified accordingly.

Release Load

Operators should consider the actual tensile load present at the time the release is commanded. Mooring tension can vary because of buoyancy, current drag, dynamic loading, fouling and the attitude of the deployed system.

The release should not be selected solely from the dry weight of the connected equipment.

Acoustic Range

Maximum command and tracking range depends on more than the water depth. Relevant factors include:

  • – Slant range between the vessel and release
  • – Frequency band
  • – Topside transducer and source level
  • – Vessel and machinery noise
  • – Sea state
  • – Sound-speed structure
  • – Transducer depth and orientation
  • – Acoustic shadowing from the seabed or subsea structure

Frequency Compatibility

RT 6-1000 and RT 6-3000 operate in the Medium Frequency band. RT 6-6000 and RT 6-HD operate in the Low Medium Frequency band.

The selected Ranger 2 or Deck Topside configuration must support the frequency of the release. Frequency compatibility should be confirmed before mobilisation.

Redundancy

High-value or high-risk deployments may justify tandem releases, redundant recovery methods or a high-load release frame.

Redundancy requirements should be considered during the design of the mooring or structure, rather than added after the deployment rigging has been completed.

Battery and Deployment Duration

Published battery endurance depends on the specified operating assumptions. Storage duration, acoustic interrogation rate, tracking activity, environmental temperature and battery condition can affect practical endurance.

A battery and function test should be completed before each deployment.

RT 6-1000

RT 6-1000 is a compact acoustic release transponder for coastal, continental-shelf and general-purpose subsea deployments to depths of 1,000 m.

With a 150 kg Working Load Limit and alkaline battery endurance exceeding 13 months, it is suited to environmental sensors, instrument packages, small moorings and seabed equipment that must remain deployed for a season or a full annual survey cycle.

The unit can be configured and commanded using compatible Deck Topside equipment, the RT 6 Android application or a Ranger 2 USBL system. Its Medium Frequency Wideband 2 signals support more than 300 unique acoustic addresses, helping operators manage multiple nearby deployments.

Overview

RT 6-1000 is the smallest and lightest acoustic release in the RT 6 family. It combines a hemispherical acoustic transducer, inclinometer and field-proven screw-off release mechanism within a corrosion-resistant housing.

The screw-off mechanism is designed to provide a positive mechanical release action, including after extended deployments where marine growth may be present.

NFC communication allows the transponder to be configured using a compatible Android device. NFC can also be used to place the unit into storage mode when it is not deployed, helping preserve battery capacity.

Optional Rope Canister

An optional rope canister can be fitted where the operator needs to recover an item that is too heavy or insufficiently buoyant to rise directly with the release.

After release, the positively buoyant RT 6-1000 rises toward the surface while paying out a high-strength rope from the canister. The recovered rope can then be used to lift or retrieve the subsea item.

Available rope-canister configurations vary in rope length and Working Load Limit. The appropriate canister must be selected for the intended recovery load.

Typical Applications

  • – Coastal environmental monitoring
  • – Seabed sensor recovery
  • – Small oceanographic moorings
  • – Hydrophone and acoustic recorder deployments
  • – Current-meter and CTD frames
  • – Equipment marking and salvage recovery
  • – Continental-shelf scientific surveys

RT 6-3000

RT 6-3000 is a deepwater acoustic release transponder for instrument moorings, seabed frames and subsea structures deployed to operational depths of 3,000 m.

Its 1,275 kg Working Load Limit supports considerably heavier equipment than the RT 6-1000, while alkaline battery endurance exceeding 32 months makes it suitable for sustained oceanographic and environmental monitoring programs.

The Medium Frequency unit can be commanded and tracked using compatible Ranger 2 USBL systems or operated using Deck Topside with an appropriate dunking transducer.

Overview

RT 6-3000 combines a Wideband 2 navigation transponder with a spring-assisted, high-load mechanical release. Its mechanical design is derived from Sonardyne’s established oceanographic release transponders.

The hemispherical transducer provides broad acoustic coverage, allowing the release to be tracked during deployment, while on the seabed and as equipment returns toward the surface.

Sonardyne publishes a maximum acoustic slant range of 4,500 m, subject to the selected topside, vessel noise and environmental conditions.

Long-Term Deployment

Battery life exceeds 32 months under the published operating conditions. An external magnetic battery-disconnect fob allows the battery to be electronically isolated when the release is not in service.

This avoids repeatedly opening the pressure housing simply to disconnect the battery and reduces the risk of incorrect reassembly or seal contamination.

Release Frames

RT 6-3000 can be used individually or installed in compatible tandem and high-load release frames.

Frame systems can substantially increase the Working Load Limit for structure deployment and recovery. The depth rating and load rating of the complete framed assembly depend on the selected release transponders and frame configuration.

Typical Applications

  • – Deepwater oceanographic moorings
  • – Long-duration environmental monitoring
  • – Seabed landers and instrument packages
  • – Subsea structure deployment
  • – Lowered equipment frames
  • – Energy and offshore survey programs
  • – Defence and scientific monitoring

RT 6-3000 is pressure rated to 4,000 m. Sonardyne recommends an operating depth no greater than 3,000 m because of the practical acoustic-range limitations of the MF system.

RT 6-6000

RT 6-6000 is a full-ocean-depth acoustic release transponder for deepwater moorings, seabed equipment and sustained observation programs to depths of 6,000 m.

It provides the same 1,275 kg Working Load Limit as the RT 6-3000 but uses a Low Medium Frequency acoustic system suited to greater slant ranges and deeper deployments.

Battery endurance exceeding 32 months supports multi-year scientific and environmental monitoring, while Ranger 2 compatibility allows the transponder to be located, tracked and commanded from an appropriately equipped vessel.

Overview

RT 6-6000 combines Sonardyne 6G and Wideband 2 acoustic technology with a proven spring-assisted mechanical release.

The unit is commonly installed at the base of deep-ocean moorings, where it remains under sustained tensile load until recovery. It can also be integrated into subsea instrument frames, lowered platforms and equipment packages.

Deepwater Acoustic Operation

The LMF acoustic band is intended for long-range communication in deep water. A hemispherical transducer provides broad acoustic coverage for command, ranging and USBL tracking.

Actual command and tracking range depends on vessel noise, the topside transceiver, water-column conditions, transducer deployment depth and acoustic propagation.

Battery Isolation

An external magnetic battery-disconnect fob electronically isolates the internal battery when the unit is not deployed.

This helps preserve battery capacity and avoids opening the release housing solely to disconnect or reconnect the battery.

Higher-Load Frames

RT 6-6000 is compatible with selected tandem and heavy-duty release frames where loads exceed the rating of one standalone release.

Sonardyne publishes frame configurations with substantially higher Working Load Limits. The complete frame, release and rigging arrangement must be selected according to the intended depth and structural load.

Typical Applications

  • – Deep-ocean instrument moorings
  • – Abyssal environmental monitoring
  • – Ocean-bottom seismology
  • – Deepwater seabed observatories
  • – Research-vessel science programs
  • – Site survey and characterisation
  • – Energy, defence and ocean-science deployments

RT 6-HD

RT 6-HD is Sonardyne’s highest-load and deepest-rated standard acoustic release transponder, providing a 2,500 kg Working Load Limit and operation to 7,000 m.

It is intended for demanding applications including subsea structure installation, heavy equipment recovery, telecommunications cable work, salvage and deepwater sensor monitoring.

The LMF transponder can be tracked and commanded using compatible Ranger 2 USBL systems or operated using a suitably configured Deck Topside system.

Overview

RT 6-HD provides twice the standalone Working Load Limit of the RT 6-3000 and RT 6-6000. It achieves this without requiring an external load-amplification frame.

The housing and load-bearing structure are manufactured from super duplex stainless steel to provide high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance in deepwater environments.

Heavy Subsea Loads

The release is designed for subsea structures and equipment packages that exceed the capacity of standard oceanographic releases.

A 5,000 kg proof load and 10,000 kg breaking load provide a 4:1 design relationship to the published 2,500 kg Working Load Limit.

The WLL applies to the release itself. Shackles, slings, lifting points, bridles and other rigging components must carry compatible certified ratings.

Deepwater Positioning and Control

LMF Wideband acoustic communication supports deepwater command and tracking. When used with Ranger 2, RT 6-HD can form part of the vessel’s operational positioning display during lowering, installation and recovery.

Where a Ranger 2 system is not available, compatible Deck Topside equipment can be used with an over-the-side transducer.

Typical Applications

  • – Heavy subsea structure installation
  • – Deepwater telecommunications cable repair
  • – Salvage and recovery
  • – Large sensor and monitoring packages
  • – Deep-ocean engineering projects
  • – Energy infrastructure deployment
  • – Defence and specialist subsea operations
